Wacky Wednesday

I thought it might be fun on Wednesdays to highlight the most absurd religious idea, article or whatever that I could find. I also would be more than willing to take suggestions, if you find something that you feel is utterly crazy free to e-mail it to me.

For todays post I would like to share an article from Answers in Genesis with you. This article is about defending their young earth view and explaining that if Christians didn't hold true to the young earth view then they were rejecting the Bible in favor of science.

The whole idea that the Earth is only a few thousand years old is so absurd that it makes my brain hurt. I am not going to spend time during this post explaining why the earth can't be only a few thousand years old since I feel that the majority of theists aren't holders of this crazy idea and there is already a lot of information available supporting the fact that science can be trusted when it comes to dating the Earth.

I would instead like to focus on the idea presented in the article that academic success shouldn't be celebrated. They are pushing the thought that Christians should close their minds to science and trust the Bible alone. I personally love to learn I am always trying to learn as much as I can about everything and anything. If the Bible were true why would the God be so worried about people learning as much as they could about this world?

There is a theme throughout the bible to just blindly believe like a child, don't question what God says. Christians are also likened to sheep. I know a lot of Christians that love to think of themselves as sheep. Do they realize what that means? Sheep don't think, they just follow orders blindly.

Don't strive be sheep! Strive to learn as much as you can! There is so much out there to learn and discover. Be very skeptical of anyone who says that everything should be accepted blindly with childlike faith, instead of testing it using scientifically proven methods.

Noah's Ark

Noah's Ark was one of the stories that even as a child I wasn't sure how exactly it could have happened, but as a child I was told that all of my questions could easily be explained by the fact that God can do anything. That answer wasn't very satisfying, but I excepted it because I was a child and figured that adults knew more than me.

Well, now I know better and I am here to shout it from the rooftops the story of Noah's Ark is BULLSHIT!

Here are some of the problems that noticed when I was a child. First, why did God kill everyone except Noah's family? I just couldn't believe that everyone was that bad. Second, how did they get so bad? As a child I had heard over and over that a child was a reflection of their parents. So, if all the people were so bad wasn't that a negative reflection on God? Third, I thought about the story logically and just couldn't believe that 8 people could take care of all those animals. Seriously, I have seen how much work a small farm is even with all of the modern technology that we have. It just isn't possible that 8 people could take care of all those animals.

As I have studied the works of many different skeptics and theists I have notice a bunch of other problems with that story. One of these is simply how did all of the animals migrate to Noah to get on the boat. The only way that this would have been possible would be if God had magically brought them to Noah and since Moses didn't add that detail into the story I don't think that happened. Moses doesn't seem to be the kind of guy to leave out interesting and unbelievable details. Second, how did the world get repopulated so quickly without all the problems that would have been caused my inbreeding?

This is just a brief list of the questions that I have encountered when thinking about this story. I really could list many more, but in a effort to keep my posts brief I will leave you with some links from websites that portray both perspectives of the story.

There are a multitude of delusional groups that have weak, but very funny answers to all these questions. Please check them out not only for a good laugh, but to also know what kind of arguments you need to be able to fight.

Also here are some links to information put out there by some skeptics. I hope that you will find all this information as enjoyable as I did. Notice how much more science is used by the skeptics.

I hope that if you are a theists that you read through not only the theists arguments, but also the skeptics side too.

My Story

I thought by sharing my story you as my reader will know where I am coming from with all my other posts. Growing up I went to church without fail every single Sunday morning and evening, and Wednesday. The joke was whenever the church doors were open my family was there. I think that I truly believed in God until I was about 10 to 12 years old. Then I realized that some of the stories I was hearing in Sunday School and the information that I was learning in school couldn't coexist. I also noticed that there were large sections of the Old Testament that no one followed anymore, but then bits and pieces that we did follow. This was all very confusing to my young mind, but I knew that if I asked questions at my local church I would be labeled as a weak Christian and they wouldn't let me keep some of the responsibilities that I enjoyed so much.

So, I decided that every year when I would go off to Christian summer camp I would ask my questions. Year after year I asked not only my counselors, but also the directors of the camps and the evangelists, but there wasn't a single person that could give me a rational answer. Most would say "that is the way God works" or "God did it that is all you need to know". I hated those answers, but I feared if I wasn't a Christian no one would like me. So, I decided that I would just sweep all these doubt under the rug and continue on.

That worked pretty well until about two years ago when I met the man who is now my husband. When we met he told me that he wasn't sure that there was even a God, as soon as he said that all of my doubts and fears came out from under the rug. I was really scared at first, but then we both started talking about our doubts and we read books on both sides of the fence and over the course of several month we realized together that there was no rational proof for the existence of a god.

Over the last year we have read many books that support our position as well as many blogs. So, even though I have only held this position for about a year I am very strong in my outlook on life and have no desire to ever go back to the bonds of religion.

Welcome

I would like to welcome you to my blog. This blog is targeted toward a godless audience, but I welcome anyone. With that said the average theist is probably not going to feel very comfortable reading what I have to say, but none the less I do welcome any theist to leave comments. I am always up for a good debate.

To all of my atheist friends, I have only been free from the bonds of religion for about a year so if anyone has any words of wisdom for me or any books that you feel are critical for me to read please let me know. I really want to become a strong member of the atheist community.

If anyone has any suggestions about how I could make this blog better please feel free to e-mail or comment. I welcome any feedback.
